Berlin Dinner Party

by

My mom took these pictures of the dinner party Buck hosted for her visit to Berlin last month. He is in grad school in Frankfurt but lives most of the time in Berlin while running a company based in New York. Brother Buck is so cosmopolitan.

How darling is the presentation? If you don’t have platters just lay some parchment on the table and go to town.

A spartan student budget doesn’t mean you can’t entertain with style. A cluster of votive candles in a white dish is always elegant.

Looks delicious!

One Great Reason to Get Excited for Winter 2012

by

I know it’s just barely Fall, but let’s look forward to Christmas day, ok?

Turn up the volume and grab a tissue.

P.S. I know opinions are split on Anne Hathaway. But is there anything the girl can’t do?

Baby Shower Sneak Peek

by

Beautiful hostesses and one mama-to-be (Halie, Lydia, Marah, me, Julie, Sarah, and Jenn)

Where to begin? Saturday was my baby shower and my girlfriends collaborated on what was the most stunning and thoughtful event I’ve ever seen.

Recognizing each of the girls in the little details- sweet invitations, whimsical (and snuggly) centerpieces, a totally original baby game and guest book, my dream dessert display,  homemade cupcakes and favorite childhood treats, a fun music mix, and custom menus- reminded me how lucky I am to have such creative, generous women in my life.

My sister, me, and our beautiful mom

Sarah posted her gorgeous DIY macaron towers, my sister’s pictures went live this morning, and Lydia will be here later this week to give you an in-depth tour of the planning and details.

Instagram album

For now, one great party tip from the hosts: have guests hashtag their photos on Instagram to create an immediate, collaborative on-line album. To see ours, use Instagram on your iPhone and search hashtag slshower (#SLSHOWER).

My edible baby niece.

If you’re not an iPhone user, I hope a snap of Ruby in her party dress will tide you over until Lydia is here to share more. Ruby loved being with all the big girls.

Thank you to my talented friends and family. I can’t wait for this baby to love you like her mama does.

Focusing Inward

by

Popping out of my chef’s coat at 8-1/2 months

Here’s what I plan to do beginning today, my first full day of maternity leave. I’m going to focus on what’s been happening right in front of me these past 9 months. If you think it’d be hard to ignore this roly-poly chickadee, you’re right. But knowing a baby is there isn’t the same as focusing on her. My intention for the next month- if she allows me the time- is to practice being present for her. I’ll put down the phone, slow the email response time, and listen to what she’s telling me.

Details need attending. I’ve a nursery to finish, food to make and freeze, and relaxation techniques to practice. That will all either get done or it won’t, depending on her schedule. What it comes down to this. To do anything well, to enjoy anything deeply, you must commit to following the process wherever it takes you. And this is the one chance I have to do this very special thing.

I so appreciate you coming along for the ride.

Will & Niki’s Wedding

by

Drew and I were in a wedding this summer that was SO special and it now being featured on GreenWeddingShoes.com. Go look at all the thoughtful details and fun touches the couple dreamed up. Below are some of my personal favorites captured beautifully captured by One Love Photography.

One Love Photography

The coolest wedding venue, Santa Margarita Ranch in San Luis Obispo, CA (no relation to the pinot grigio).

One Love Photography

How amazing are these invitations Niki dreamed up and a friend designed? The double gun heart is a personal highlight for me.

One Love Photography

The bride rocked a J.Crew wedding dress with hot pink nails and lips and the grooms and his men wore gingham.

One Love Photography

darlings

One Love Photography

The groom found these screen doors and made the pinwheels out of paper himself. How cute is that? They framed the couple during the ceremony under that massive oak tree.

One Love Photography

The bride bought these assorted pom poms and we stuffed them into wax bags sealed with a cool DIY printer labels.

One Love Photography

Lemonade and Sweet Tea greeted guests and the signature drinks after the ceremony were strawberry-vodka and margaritas served in jam jars.

One Love Photography

Mini succulents (bought online and potted by friends) were the escort cards and the favor, so clever.

One Love Photography

Hands down my favorite detail was the names of the tables, Southern expressions from the bride’s colorful father, printed on cool card stock and glued to wooded sticks. If you have a daddy with expressions this good you must incorporate them into your wedding! Friends also potted those succulent centerpieces about a week before the wedding. Drew was in charge of placing the little rocks in the arrangements, don’t they look perfect?

One Love Photography

A twinkle lit barn streaming in twilight, the perfect setting for the delicious Southern Comfort food menu. To protect our party cloths from fried chicken and mac n’ cheese we had paper bibs! See them hanging from the plate, have fun and get messy indeed.

One Love Photography

Dessert was a pie and ice cream extravaganza which I did not eat because I was dancing. Nothing beats a RedShoe dance party, not even pie.

Congratulations Will & Niki!

Hard Cider

by

Have you tried hard cider recently? This is not an overly sweet pink version available on tap at a mega chain restaurant or something a college girl adds to a pint of beer to make it pear sweet. This is the hard cider of kings and queens.

Fizzy and dry with the crisp notes of apples, hard cider is the official drink of pre-fall. Drew had become a connoisseur of cider since it’s Gluten Free, light in alcohol and slightly more manly to drink while watching football than say… white wine.

So when Farnum Hill sent me some other their orchard ciders to try, Drew and I danced a little jig of happiness. While Farnum Hill is available all over in New England, us west coasters can dream they will make it to our stores soon. Not sweet at all but elegantly fruity like champagne, we found it to be the best of the best.

Our other favorite dry ciders which are available in most areas (try larger wine stores, Whole Foods and well curated liquor stores).

Julian (regular and cherry bomb flavor)

Crispin

Angry Orchard (the ginger flavor is kickin)

Original Sin

Cheers!

Classic Rice Pudding

by

Rice pudding haunts me. Not like the best ice cream you ever had haunts you, but like a wind in the door or a dark feeling on a sunny day.  When I think rice pudding, I remember smudged glasses of cold, wet rice glistening in the halogen glow of a diner in Montclair, NJ where friends and I stopped on our way back to school the night George W. was elected.  We were tired from a long day of job interviews and feeling defeated by the rain, the long drive ahead, and the radio coverage of the confusion down in Florida.  I don’t remember our dinner conversation, but I can’t forget that the rice pudding was gelatinous and faintly blue.

Time for an exorcism.

Special thanks to La Femme Epicure who added almond extract to the whipped cream and brought all the flavors together.  Did you know that almonds are actually stone fruit? Apricots, peaches, plums, nectarines and cherries taste so good with almond-flavored crusts and creams because the nut enhances what flavor the fruit already pulled from its pit.  That’s why the French leave pits in their cherry clafoutis. Personally, I prefer a little extract to a broken tooth.

The result is something to celebrate- cold, creamy and comforting with traditional pudding spices and a surprising freshness from summer fruit and almond cream. Poor rice pudding will never have the visual appeal of a chocolate chip cookie or a tall piece of cake, but that just means more for those of us who know to look past the lumps.

Ghost, be gone.

Classic Rice Pudding Topped with Nectarines and Almond Whipped Cream

Serves 4

Make 1 day ahead to chill

Ingredients

3/4 cups uncooked white rice (sushi, jasmine, plain old medium-grain)

1-1/2 cups whole milk

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cinnamon stick

1/2 vanilla bean

3/4 cup golden raisins

1 egg, lightly beaten

2 cups heavy cream, divided

pinch confectioner’s sugar

1 tsp almond extract

2-3 pieces stone fruit, diced (we used nectarines)

cinnamon, for dusting

Directions

In a medium pot, cook rice in water according to the package directions.

In a separate pot, combine the milk, sugar, salt and cinnamon stick.  Split the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and scrape all the “caviar” into your milk mixture.  (Save the bean for vanilla sugar).  Add the golden raisins and bring milk to a low simmer.  Remove from the heat, cover, and let the flavor steep for at least 15 minutes.

Add the cooked rice to the steeped milk and return to the heat, stirring occasionally over medium heat, for about 15 minutes.  Stir in the egg and 1/2 cup cream.  Cook for 2 minutes more and remove from the heat.  Let cool and chill overnight, either in individual serving glasses or in one bowl.

To serve, whip the remaining cream into soft peaks, adding a pinch of confectioner’s sugar and one teaspoon of almond extract to as you go.  Dice your stonefruit.   Top the chilled rice pudding with a dollop of cream and a spoonful of fruit. Dust with cinnamon and serve.

Who’s Afraid of Wallpaper?

by

via

Me.  Wallpaper costs more than paint and you have to hire someone to hang it right.  At least I would.

But isn’t it happy and bright?

via

These peonies look old-ladyish.  Exactly what comes to mind when you think “wallpaper”, right?

Except in real life, they are drop-dead gorgeous. Not claustrophobic and fuddy-duddy, just cool and fresh.

via

The wallpaper that started my obsession.  Like a fading shot of your most treasured day, it tugs at my heartstrings.   And it’s wallpaper, friends.  Wallpaper.

The caramel deliciousness of that headboard and all the bright white doesn’t hurt. But it’s the wallpaper that gets me, even three years after I first pinned the picture.

What do you think?  Is wallpaper worth the commitment?

xxSarah
